Extreme North-western tip of Arizona

Ranges:

Mainly Grand Canyon Area

 

Elevation:

2,000 - 8,000 feet

 

Habitat:

Desert areas, steep and rocky canyons, rolling hills, high plains

 

Reproduction:

Mates in Spring

Oviparous

Young born in Summer

 

Behavior:

BITES WHEN HANDLED OR HARRASSED!

Nocturnal during hot months.

Diurnal during cool months.

Hibernates in Winter

Subspecies in Arizona:

1. Grand Canyon Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus abyssus)

Found strictly in the Grand Canyon.

2. Midget Faded Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus concolor)

Found only in a small area in northern AZ near Lake Powell.

3. Great Basin Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus lutosus)

Found in north-west AZ in the Arizona Strip.
