Variable Sandsnake

Mildly-venomous

(Comparable to a bee sting considered harmless to humans)

 

Distinguishing Features:

(Very Small Snake) 11” in length

Orange skin with black saddles on the top of the body.

Full black ring around the tail. 

Cream-colored bottom.

Light-colored snout with black bands around the eyes. 

 

Reproduction:

Oviparous.

Produces 4 eggs in the spring.

 

Behavior:

Nocturnal.

Ground-dweller.

It spends the majority of its time under loose gravel and litter along the banks of washes.

 

Habitat:

Sonoran desert scrub in south central Arizona. 

 

Hibernation:

Hibernates in winter

 

Diet:

Insects such as roaches, grasshoppers, and centipedes.

Facts:

Rear-fanged.
