Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake

Distinguishing Features:

(Medium-sized snake) up to 3 1/2 feet long.

Red, black, and white snake.

White bands are bordered by black bands.

The black bands will bridge across the red bands.

Larger head with black mask around the eyes, round pupils, and a light cream-colored snout.

 

Reproduction:

Oviparous.

Produces up to 9 eggs in summer.

 

Behavior:

BITES WHEN HANDLED!

Primarily diurnal.

Can be nocturnal on warm nights.

Ground-dweller with tree climbing abilities. 

It will defensively discharge foul-smelling musk and feces. 

Powerful constrictors.

 

Habitat:

Mountains and forest terrains.

 

Hibernation:

Hibernates in winter

 

Diet:

Lizards, rodents, birds, and bats.

 

Life Span:

10-15 years

Arizona is home to 2 subspecies:

  1. Utah Mountain Kingsnake - found north of the Colorado River

  2. Arizona Mountain Kingsnake - found south of the Colrado River
