Glossy Snake

Distinguishing Features:

(Medium sized snakes) lengths up to 3 1/2 feet.

Smooth shiny tan-colored skin with dark blotches. 

White underside.

Round Pupils.

 

Reproduction:

Oviparous.

Produces up to 23 eggs annually or bi-annually in the summer.

Young typically hatch in August and the mother will protect the them for the first 2 weeks. 

 

Behavior:

Nocturnal.

Ground dwellers. 

Constrictors. 

 

Habitat:

Most of Arizona’s habitats 

 

Hibernation:

Hibernates in winter. 

 

Diet:

Rodents, lizards, snakes, and birds.

 

Life Span:

15-20 years

There are 3 subspecies in Arizona:

  1. Desert Glossy Snake (west and southwest AZ)

  2. Arizona Glossy Snake (south central AZ)

  3. Painted Desert Glossy Snake ( northeastern AZ and the extreme southeastern AZ)
